Reminder: Fake Erectile Dysfunction Treatments Still Problematic

Some drug counterfeiters are so sophisticated that it takes an expert to distinguish between their fake drugs and the real thing.

In one of its most recent offensives against the scourge of counterfeit pharmacies targeting American consumers, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration launched Operation Pangea X in September 2017.

The operation, part of Interpol’s annual International Internet Week of Action, was designed to combat “the unlawful sale and distribution of illegal and potentially counterfeit or substandard medical products on the internet.”

Since the late 1990s, Viagra, Cialis, and the other popular oral erectile dysfunction drugs have been among the most widely counterfeited drugs in this illicit online trade. Despite the progress that the FDA and its international partners make in these periodic offensives, new counterfeiting operations and fake pharmacies spring up almost as quickly as others are shut down.

Telltale Signs of Illegal Pharmacies

Although these illegal pharmacies traffic in prescription medications of almost every description, they generally share certain traits in common. For example, most purport to be based in the United States or Canada when in fact they are usually located in less developed countries.

In addition, unlike legitimate online pharmacies that either requires a prescription or provide telemedicine-like consultations with licensed physicians, these illegal operations offer drugs — including controlled substances — without a prescription.

In the case of the ever-popular ED drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors, illegal online vendors may supply products that are virtually identical to the real thing. However, the counterfeit medications they sell may be more than just a waste of your money. They could very well endanger your health.

Some of the counterfeit Viagra and Cialis confiscated in customs seizures have been found to contain none of the active ingredients that are found in authentic formulations of the medications. In other cases, the active ingredient was present but in quantities too low to be effective or so high that they could pose a hazard to consumer health.

Some Contain Toxic Materials

Worse yet, many of these counterfeit ED drugs have been found to contain toxic materials as either filler material or coloring agents. In the case of fake Viagra, printer’s ink has been used to recreate the distinctive blue color of the medication. Some counterfeiters use drywall fiber as filler material.

Of course, consumers lack the sophisticated testing equipment the FDA and other regulatory agencies have to determine the actual chemical composition of these counterfeit drugs. So if you decide to take the chance of buying ED drugs from an online supplier of dubious repute, you’ll be taking your health and safety into your own hands.

Generics to Bring Lower Prices

Changes are coming to the ED drug marketplace that may soon make the low price of and no-prescription access to counterfeits far less appealing than they have been until recently. In December 2017, the first generic formulations of Viagra became available to U.S. consumers. Both Teva Pharmaceuticals and Greenstone LLC, a subsidiary of Pfizer, are marketing their generic versions of the little blue pill under its generic designation of sildenafil citrate. These generics are priced considerably lower than brand-name Viagra, and the price gap is likely to grow as more and more generics come to market.

With less expensive Viagra on the market, other brand-name ED drug manufacturers may lower prices to keep their customers from switching to generic Viagra. And late 2018 may very likely witness the arrival of generic formulations of Cialis and Levitra, both of which are nearing the end of their market exclusivity.

Buyer Beware

If you value your health more than your wallet, you should buy your ED medications exclusively from reliable suppliers, whether they are local brick-and-mortar pharmacies or trustworthy online facilitators such as AccessRx.com.
