More Insurer Drug Formularies Cover Generic Viagra

Lower-cost generic alternatives to pricey brand-name drugs give insurers more incentive to include generics in their drug formularies.

The late 2017 debut of generic alternatives to Viagra marked the first availability of generic erectile dysfunction drugs to American men suffering from ED caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis. It is probably only a matter of time before major insurers begin covering, at least to some degree, the cost of these medications and others that soon will be introduced to the U.S. market.

The drug formularies of several major insurers already list sildenafil citrate, Viagra’s active ingredient, as a covered drug for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a form of high blood pressure that targets the lungs. Sildenafil citrate is also the active ingredient in Revatio, a Pfizer brand-name medication marketed specifically as a PAH treatment.

Off-Label Prescriptions Possible

Although 20-milligram sildenafil citrate is equal to a single dose of Revatio, a man who took two or three of these tablets would undoubtedly enjoy the “erection friendly” effects of the medication as well. Until insurers actually list generic Viagra on their drug formularies, sympathetic physicians may well be persuaded to prescribe two or three 20-milligram tablets of sildenafil daily for patients who need a little help to overcome symptoms of ED.

Late 2018 very likely will witness the introduction of two more generic alternatives to popular brand-name ED drugs, namely Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil). It is also possible that in time, they too will be included in the drug formularies of major health care insurers.
