Is Beetroot Juice ‘Natural Viagra’?

Glass of beet juice.

Beetroot juice is loaded with vitamins and minerals, including nitrates.

Touted by some as a natural remedy for erectile dysfunction, beetroot juice is unquestionably a healthy beverage. However, available scientific evidence, which is admittedly limited, hardly qualifies it as a substitute for Viagra or any of the other oral ED drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors.

The juice’s primary claim to efficacy in the treatment of ED rests on its high levels of nitrates, minerals that the body converts into nitric oxide, which is a vasodilator that stimulates arteries to expand, thus increasing blood flow. Beetroot juice is also rich in a wide array of other minerals and vitamins, including large amounts of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant.

Its high levels of nutrients, including nitrates, make it a healthy addition to virtually anyone’s daily diet. And its vascular-friendly properties very well may help men prevent or at least delay the onset of ED, but it isn’t powerful enough on its own to enable impotent men to regain erectile function.

Beetroot juice is particularly recommended for men suffering from high blood pressure, one of many vascular-related causes of ED. An article at Healthline.com cites a 2014 study showing that drinking a daily cup of beetroot juice can lower blood pressure almost as effectively as some types of antihypertensive medications.

Most men can safely add beet juice to their diets without any serious side effects, although it’s best to speak to your doctor to ensure that the juice won’t interact adversely with any drugs you’re taking.
