According to the Bangkok Post, Governor Pipat Ekpapan was instructing the college to study the indigenous plant and seek a patent registration.
All of this happened on the heels of a major announcement by local health officials warning that 10 samples of the drug sildenafil, the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, taken from the region were from found to be unlicensed.
Of the 10 samples, which were in both powder and capsule form, none was found to be licensed by the Food and Drug Administration.
The risk of fake Viagra
The director-general of the Medical Sciences Department, Dr. Sukhum Kanchanaphimai, warned that taking unlicensed erectile dysfunction drugs, including fake Viagra, is very dangerous—even fatal. Dr. Kanchanaphimai explained that consumers have no way of knowing what ingredients they’re taking in unlicensed erectile dysfunction pills.
Viagra in the United States
Because Viagra is not only the most popular erectile dysfunction drug in the world but also the most counterfeited, it requires a prescription in the United States.
This ensures that men are getting FDA-approved Viagra, which is not only effective but also pure.
By requiring a prescription for Viagra, men also have the opportunity to talk to a medical provider about current medications, including prescription, legal and illegal drugs, supplements, vitamins and minerals they may be taking. It also ensures they’ll talk to their doctor about health concerns.
Although Viagra is safe for most men and works for more than 80% of men with erectile dysfunction, it should be used under the care of a doctor.
Viagra does have possible side effects, but most men say they are so minor that they continue taking the erectile dysfunction drug.
