It’s summertime! The crisp, clear water is sparkling in the pool, and the smell of charcoal smoke and delicious burgers is drifting through the air. I can’t imagine a much better way to spend the afternoon than with my family and friends relaxing by the pool with a cold beer in my hand and not a single worry in my mind.
That is a reality now because I have figured out how to prevent the horrible nagging pain that is associated with heartburn.
I started getting ulcers years ago, and it took me a long time to figure out what the problem was, being the type of person who would rather self diagnose than have to visit a doctor. I’ve always enjoyed my few indulgences in life, mainly spicy food and cold beer…and preferably at the same time.
I finally decided to go to the doctor, and he told me that I had heartburn and ulcers. Heartburn has nothing to do with the heart of course, it was just named that because of the burning sensation in your chest. I was given Nexium to treat it, which worked wonders. Within a couple days I no longer had heartburn, no matter what I ate.
Of course, the doctor also recommended that I avoid alcohol and spicy foods. I told him thank you for the suggestion, knowing that that was not going to happen any time soon. As a result I occasionally will have to get Nexium again once the symptoms flare up, but it always does the trick.
There are also a few things you can change about your lifestyle to help prevent heartburn:
1). Lose Weight – If you are obese the extra weight on your stomach will push the stomach up, forcing acid into the esophagus.
2). Looser Clothes – Tight fitting clothes have the same effect of putting pressure on the stomach and lower esophagus.
3). Dont Lie Down – Wait at least two to three hours to lie down after eating. If you have to lie down, elevate your head to prevent acid from moving into the esophagus.
