Levitra (vardenafil) was approved for usage in the U.S. on the 19th of August, 2003. Before its introduction to the market the only ED (Erectile Dysfunction) treatment option was Viagra (sildenafil). Levitra can work in as little as 12 minutes and stay in a person’s system for up to 24 hours. Bayer and GaxoSmithKline, the manufacturers, Bayer and GlaxoSmithKline, believe this will lead to more spontaneous and thus more enjoyable sexual encounters for people requiring erectile dysfunction treatment.
Levitra works as a PDE5 inhibitor, rapidly entering the bloodstream and relaxing the main arteries which feed blood to the penis. The PDE5 enzyme in the penis is what controls how much blood is pumped into the main shaft. When this enzyme is disabled, the blood can flow freely, and upon sexual arousal or stimulation, an erection is easily achieved and maintained for a prolonged period of time.
Levitra comes in 2.5-mg, 5-mg, 10-mg, and 20-mg tablets. Usually the starting dose for Levitra is 10-mg. Your physician will dispense the right dosage for you based upon your medical history and situation, as each patient’s needs are unique. Always make sure to tell your doctor all of the medications that you are currently taking, whether they are prescription or over-the-counter.
While all three of these leading ED drugs are PDE5 inhibitors, there are some minor differences between them. Viagra was the first ED drug and is considered to be the strongest; however it only lasts about 4-5 hours in the system. Cialis is the newest of the ED drugs and touts a hefty 24-36 hour presence in the system, while Levitra falls in between Cialis and Viagra–kicking in fast and lasting roughly 4-8 hours or more. Also, Levitra has been shown to work for many ED patients when these other two ED drugs have not.
If Levitra is a last resort for you, a study determined that just 30 minutes of gardening, five days a week, is enough to reduce the risk of impotence by around 38 percent. And you don’t have to garden. The study showed other forms of moderate exercise, such as dancing, cycling or jogging, can also provide the same benefits as Levitra or other ED drugs.
Published in the journal European Urology, the study showed that men aged 45 to 60 who burn up just 1,000 calories a week through exercise can help offset ED. This is the daily equivalent to 30 to 45 minutes of gardening, dancing for half an hour, cycling four miles in 15 minutes or jogging 1.5 miles.
