Aldara Overview

Aldara (imiquimod) cream is a topical treatment used to treat external genital warts (EGW) or actinic keratosis (AK) on the surface of the skin. Aldara has been designed not only to get rid of the warts but also to help the body fight the virus that causes the warts. Aldara is a patient applied treatment, which makes it highly convenient compared to other treatment methods, as it can be applied easily at home.

When taken as directed, most people will see phenomenal results when treating either of these skin conditions. Only take this drug as directed by a physician. Aldara is commonly used as an alternative to liquid nitrogen therapy (wart freezing) in patients suffering from outbreaks of the genital and perianal wart causing virus, HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).

How Does Aldara Work?

Aldara will not destroy healthy skin, which means that removing the wart is more comfortable than most normal treatments. Aldara can work in as little as 4 weeks, with minimal side effects. Aldara is an immune system activator. It works by activating the body’s natural immune system defense cells in the area, which then are able to defend the body against infected cells in the skin. It should be noted that Aldara is not an antiviral medication and has no such properties. Aldara is used to treat genital warts, actinic keratosis and superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC).

How to take Aldara:

Only use this topical cream as directed by your physician. Aldara cream is intended to be used one time per day, for two days per week, with a three to four day separation in between uses. Never use this cream for longer or more often than is directed by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the length of time that you should use Aldara to treat your symptoms.

Living with Genital Warts:

Living with genital warts (HPV) can have mentally devastating effects on the sufferer. Knowing that you have an STD is hard enough, much less having to refrain from sexual activity during periods of outbreak. However, modern medical technology has afforded many options in the realm of painless treatment methods for HPV. You should consider using a topical cream to easily and painlessly treat your genital warts, and be well on your way to a healthy lifestyle once again. You do not have to live with external genital warts, there is a way to treat them, and you owe it to yourself to seek treatment and be free of this virus.

What is Actinic Keratosis?

AK comprises of scale-like growths of skin most often found on those who have fair skin following prolonged exposure to the sun. The size can vary, from as small as a tiny speck to as large as an inch long. They can take on a number of shapes and colors and have the ability to develop into squamous cell cancer (skin cancer) over time if left untreated. The symptoms of AK can vary from scabbing, itchiness and flaking of the infected cell to no feeling at all. Sometimes (10-15%) the cells have the ability to develop into cancer cells when they are not treated properly.

Aldara Side Effects:

Like any prescription drug, there are some potential side effects that may occur when taking Aldara to treat Actinic Keratosis or External Genital warts. The following side effects that may occur include:

  • Redness
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Inflammation
  • Peeling
  • Scabbing
  • Crusting
  • Discoloration of skin

  • More warts may continue to surface from other infected cells
  • It is not safe to use Aldara with condoms or diaphragms as they may compromise their effects
  • Aldara does not prevent the transmission of HPV to another person

Aldara Precautions:

Always make sure to consult with your physician before using this prescription drug. Make sure that you tell your physician about EVERY drug that you are currently taking, even if you bought it over-the-counter at a local drugstore, to avoid any potential interactions. Women who are pregnant or nursing should inform their doctor before they use Aldara.
