Viagra Faqs

What Are Viagra’s Side Effects?

Short Answer: Viagra may cause mild side effects such as headaches, upset stomach, and/or facial flushing. More serious, and less common side effects include sudden changes in vision or hearing, or an erection that is very painful or lasts for more than four hours.

Long Answer: As with all prescription medications, Viagra does carry the risk of side effects, mostly mild, and short in duration. Others, however, can be more serious.

Headaches, upset stomach, stuffy nose, and backache are some of the potential mild side effects of Viagra. Flushing—the feeling of heat in the neck and chest, sometimes accompanied by redness in those areas—is another of the potential mild side effects.

The mild side effects of Viagra usually disappear in a very short time. Further, they may not appear with each use, and not all men will experience all side effects, if any at all.

Men who do suffer mild side effects like those listed above can continue to take Viagra. Any Viagra side effects experienced, however, should be reported to the doctor at the patient’s next visit.

More serious adverse side effects of Viagra include chest pain, sudden vision or hearing, or an erection that lasts more than four hours or is extremely painful. If any of these side effects are experienced, a patient should stop taking Viagra and notify their physician immediately

One of the most serious (but rarest) side effects of Viagra is loss of vision called nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition can result in permanent loss of vision. Therefore, anyone with an eye problem affecting the retina should consult a doctor BEFORE taking any medication for erectile dysfunction.
