Anytime a patient needs a shot, like a vaccine or a flu shot, a nurse usually says, “Don’t look and it won’t hurt.” Many people have considered this nothing more than friendly advice, typically given to children to keep them from crying. However, a new study shows scientific evidence that not looking does actually reduce pain.

How we perceive pain

A group of German investigators has found that, in fact, your past experience with needle pricks, along with information you receive before an injection, shape your pain experience. Their research is published in the May issue of Pain.

“Throughout our lives, we repeatedly experience that needles cause pain when pricking our skin, but situational expectations, like information given by the clinician prior to an injection, may also influence how viewing needle pricks affects pain,” says lead author Marion Höfle, a doctoral student in the research Multisensory Integration group led by Dr. Daniel Senkowski, at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.

Patients reported more pain and a more unpleasant feeling when they saw the needle before the injection. Researchers also noticed an autoimmune reaction, pupils dilated. This demonstrates that previous painful experiences with needles enhance unpleasantness of pain when viewing needle pricks.

How this could change your doctor’s visit

Researchers have deemed the “Don’t look” policy as sound advice, and with evidence backing the concept, they can attest that the old saying is acutally more than an old wives tale.

“Clinicians may be advised to provide information that reduces a patient’s expectation about the strength of forthcoming pain prior to an injection,” Höfle notes. She further states that, “because viewing a needle prick leads to enhanced pain perception as well as to enhanced autonomic nervous system activity, we’ve provided empirical evidence in favor of the common advice not to look at the needle prick when receiving an injection.”

Men everywhere have decided to talk to their doctor about a condition that once silenced many.

“Every where you look there is an advertisement to enhance your sex life,” Joe Renner said. “Viagra, Cialis, you name it those kinds of drugs are all over.”

Before the days of easy to take pills, the answer to erectile dysfunction was an injection. In 1983 a urologist injected his penis with phentolamine and found it gave him an instant erection.

The arteries of a limp penis are constricted, and they keep blood from lifting the penis.
The injection relaxed the smooth muscle in the artery walls inside his penis, causing them to open up. Blood surged into the penis and blood pressure inflated it resulting in an erection.

A new era, Viagra

In the years since Viagra has become mainstream, a painful injection to the privates aren’t necessary. Phentolamine only caused an immediate and uncontrolled erection, whereas, Viagra only gives men an erection when he is sexually aroused. Of course in 2011 the choice for many is Viagra.

Here’s a list of things to know about Viagra:

Viagra usually works in about 30-60 minutes, but for some men it works in as little as 14 minutes.

After sex, your erection will go away.

To get the fastest results, take VIAGRA on an empty stomach or after eating a low-fat meal.

VIAGRA does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Don’t mix Viagra with heart medications.

Talk to your doctor before taking this medication.

A new study shows strawberries and blueberries are brain food for elderly people. Aside from being part of a healthy diet, research suggests that nutrient rich berries can slow the rate of mental decline often associated with aging.

The results

The study results suggest that cognitive aging could be delayed by up to 2.5 years in elderly who consume greater amounts berries.

Berries contain flavonoids; a compound found in plants that has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Experts believe that stress and inflammation contribute to cognitive impairment and that increasing consumption of flavonoids could slow the harmful effects of stress and inflammation.

An aging population

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, elderly Americans increased by 15% between 2000 and 2010, faster than the total U.S. population.

“As the U.S. population ages, understanding the health issues facing this group becomes increasingly important,” said Dr. Elizabeth Devore with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass. “Our study examined whether greater intake of berries could slow rates of cognitive decline.”

Adding berries to your diet

James Joseph, PhD, director of the Neuroscience Lab at the United States Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, Boston suggests eating two to three types of fresh, frozen or dehydrated berries each day. Incorporate the benefits of berries into your daily diet with the following suggestions:

Strawberries contain more vitamin C in a one-cup serving than one orange, and are particularly high in folic acid.

How to serve: Top with Cool Whip Lite for a low-calorie dessert or dip in melted low-fat brie cheese.

Blueberries contain 20 types of anthocyanin – antioxidants that give berries their blue-violet and red colors. Other berries contain only three to four.

How to serve: Toss a handful on cereals and yogurt, blend into smoothies or put on a bagel with cream cheese.

Blackberries, Raspberries, Boysenberries each contains 8 g of fiber in one cup, one-third the daily recommended amount (25 g).

How to serve: Blend them with 100-percent fruit juice and heat to make a sauce for lean meats, like fish and chicken.

Thousands of men and women undergo plastic surgery each year. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons the most sought after plastic surgery is breast implants. While thousands of people go in for a nip here or tuck there, according to the numbers, about 296,000 women had enlargements last year alone. While that may be the top surgical procedure, Botox injections far surpass those numbers. More than 5 million people had Botox injections to smooth away fine lines and decrease wrinkles. Now the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved it for a completely different use.

Botox, its new use
Health officials have approved Botox for people dealing with bladder problems caused by spinal cord injuries.

According to a press release put out by the FDA, “Uninhibited urinary bladder contractions in people with some neurological conditions can lead to an inability to store urine. Current management of this condition includes medications to relax the bladder and use of a catheter to regularly empty the bladder.”

However, after several studies, Botox has been shown to relax the bladder and increase storage capacity and decrease embarrassing leakage.

Its effectiveness
Botox was tested on about 700 patients during two different trials.

“The patients had urinary incontinence resulting from spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis. Both studies showed statistically significant decreases in the weekly frequency of incontinence episodes in the Botox group compared with placebo.”

Botox was injected into the bladder through a scope, which may require anesthesia. The effects of Botox lasted about 10 months.

What’s Botox?
Botox is a drug made from a toxin, the same toxin that causes the life threatening type of food poisoning called botulism. Doctors use it in small doses, which leads to weakening or paralyzing certain mussels and blocking certain nerve endings. That’s why its used to remove the looks of aging.

While the injections have become widely popular, other competitors have come on the market, which is one reason some experts speculate the company is branching out to other areas.

Everywhere you look — whether online, on television, or in other media — you see images of happy couples who appear as if they have never experienced any sexual problems. Yet an estimated 30 million American men have experienced erectile dysfunction at some point. If you’re one of those 30 million, you may feel alone, and you may even feel uncomfortable discussing the situation with your physician.

While a doctor’s office is the right place to go for answers as to why you are experiencing ED and what you can do about it, you may wish you could simply discuss ED with others who are going through the same thing. Fortunately, there are several online erectile dysfunction forums where you can ask questions or otherwise discuss ED in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Here are 5 of the best erectile dysfunction forums.

1. Daily Strength Impotence and Erectile Dysfunction Support Group

Here you’ll find frank discussions about every aspect of ED, including its effects on relationships, alternative ways of seeking sexual satisfaction, and what happens when you can no longer afford ED drugs.

Discussion threads cover a broad range of topics, including helpful information about topics like counterfeit ED drugs. For example, in a thread about Cialis and Erectile Dysfunction, a user brings up the topic of counterfeit ED drugs:

“Since so many people are sharing were they get their meds i thought I would jump in as well. Just please, everyone, make sure these places are reputable, require a prescription, do not sell scheduled drugs, are pharmacy checker certified, and are able to tell you where they source their drugs.”

Other threads cover health problems that correlate with ED, like diabetes, heart problems, and clinical depression. These threads are good sources of encouragement from people who have been through similar situations:

“Medications, surgeries, major health problems, etc… all can contribute to Erectile Dysfunction. It is something he should talk to his doctor about to see if it will return or if this is permanent fix. Your doctor would have suggestions for him as well.
I am a Type 2 Diabetic and have been for quite some time now. I have been impotent and dealing with Erectile Dysfunction for about the same length of time. This has been a struggle for me and my wife but solutions are available. ”

2. EDGuider Erectile Dysfunction Guide Forum

On this site, the general discussion section alone covers a range of topics, including the best books about ED, the influence of testosterone levels on erectile function, anxiety, drug side effects, and cognitive therapy for ED.

In a thread about testosterone levels and ED, participants talk about their individual situations:

“In all the research I’ve done, the 500 range is still too low for guys our age – optimal is considered the upper 2/3 of the range, so around 700-800 or so. I hope to get there at some point and see if there’s a difference, but as my doctor explains it, low (or high) Estradiol is enough in and of itself to cause ED and low libido.”

Another thread discusses books that participants have found helpful:

“I checked out both books so far, and like what I read in the first few pages of Screams of Pleasure…. Did not let me read much but I might just pick this one up. Was browsing through the chapters and it even mentions a few points about ‘The psychological Component.’ Might have some pointers there.”

3. MDJunction ED Support Forum

This online erectile dysfunction forum describes itself as “A community of patients, family members and friends dedicated to dealing with Erectile Dysfunction, together.” The “General and Support” section is the most popular, with participants discussing drugs, relationships, prostate cancer, and being newly diagnosed with ED. In response to one user’s anxiety about experiencing erectile dysfunction after taking beta blockers, one participant writes,

“Have you talked to your doctor about your options? It may be worth seeing what options you have available to you. By not talking about your issues you maybe doing more damage than good causing pent up stress and anxiety.”

Participants can vent about their personal situation in a setting that is nonjudgmental:

“I’ve been embarrassed and more and more depressed since this began five years ago, which just gets worse. I have no ideawhere I’m going with this message…just TRYING to cut through the extreme shame of feeling–as my username suggests–emasculated to the core.”

By providing personal experiences and a supportive environment, men with ED are able to see that they are not alone, that there are many successful ways of treating ED, and that what works for one man may not be right for another.

4. PsychForums.com Erectile Dysfunction Forum

While this site does discuss the psychological side of erectile dysfunction, it in no way implies that ED is “all in your mind.” The broad range of topics discussed includes:

Girlfriends asking advice for helping a boyfriend with ED

Being unable to perform with one specific partner

The expense of regular Viagra use

Experiencing ED in a threesome situation

The use of vacuum pumps as treatment for ED

One participant writes,

“My family doctor knows me and I would feels embarrassed to ask for meds that are supposed to fight ED. And I heard they could cause blindness in some people. I want to keep my eyesight. I think it’s physical because I rarely wake up with an erection.”

Another user replies,

“See your doc. It’s the only way. If it makes it easier, write this stuff down on a piece of paper and let him read it. He may refer you to a urologist. Also, perhaps this would be easier: ask your doctor if he would refer you to a urologist. Then tell the urologist what is going on, or show him the paper. But, really, your doctor is not going to think bad of you because of this.”

5. PEGym Sexual Improvement for Men Erectile Dysfunction Forum

Here’s just a sampling of the many topics discussed on this site:

Books on ED

Loss of sensitivity

How much does Cialis cost in Canada?

Can pornography lead to ED?

Difficult maintaining an erection with a partner

One new user writes, worried about whether pornography could be contributing to his ED:

“I have had quite stressful life for last ten years. I could not feel any stress, fatigue or exhaustion even when the symptoms were quite prominent and would think that there was nothing wrong with me… Now I am exhausted both sexually and mentally so I took a break for a few months. ”

Here is one reply:

“I have seen it suggested elsewhere that one way of approaching this is to start stepping down the intensity/severity of the porn that you watch. I.e. going from harder stuff to less hard stuff, so that you are re-sensitizing yourself to less intense porn. Maybe you could give that a go. If it works, let us know!”

The Role of Online Erectile Dysfunction Forums

Erectile dysfunction is a topic that many men are hesitant to discuss even with their partners, and online discussions allow them to freely and anonymously relate what is going on with their sex lives while learning about what does and does not work for others in similar situations. Participating in an online erectile dysfunction forum is certainly not a substitute for consulting with a physician and possibly trying prescription ED drugs, but it can be a safe way for men to feel less alone and to discover that ED affects men of all ages in all life situations. Once you are ready to order an erectile dysfunction medications, make sure to Visit your physician or order medications online in a discreet manner at a site such as AccessRx.com.

Elisa Bandera, MD, PhD, who served on the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research’s Continuous Update Project Expert Panel that authored the report said, “This report shows that colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. AICR has estimated that about 45 percent of colorectal cancer cases could be prevented if we all ate more fiber-rich plant foods and less meat, drank less alcohol, moved more and stayed lean. That’s over 64,000 cases in the US every year.”

So what does that mean for your diet?

The American Institute for Cancer Research says we should limit our red meat consumption to 18 ounces per week, approximately the equivalent of five or six small portions of pork, lamb or beef.

“It appears that red meat — and maybe processed meat even more — has some relationship with colon cancer risk,” says panel member Steven H Zeisel, MD, PhD, Professor of nutrition and pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

“A betting person would say there is risk associated with the consumption of red meat and processed meat,” he says. “Moderating the amount of red meat you take in is reasonable based on this data. And trying to cut back and substitute other types of meat or vegetables would be a good idea for someone who wants to reduce risk of colon cancer.”

The Institute also suggests avoiding all processed meats, like the sliced ham or turkey you buy at the deli. Processed meat raises the risk of colorectal cancer twice as much as red meat does and may contain bacteria the authors found.

Add Fiber

The research gives another reason for consumers to watch their diet, and add fiber to their daily checklist. Fiber, found in things like beans and other vegetables, can protect organs from cancer forming tumors.

by Mary Hiers

Men who experience erectile dysfunction (ED) may compound the problem by over-speculation on what the root of the problem is. A man with ED may wonder,

Is this all in my head?

Does it mean I have an underlying medical condition?

Is it an indicator of relationship problems?

Most medical experts believe that ED can have a physiological basis, a psychological basis, or both. Rare are medical experts who definitively state that ED is one or the other. The good news is that there are many excellent treatment options available for ED, so regardless of the cause, help is available. Here are 5 expert opinions on the physiological and psychological components of ED

1. Dr. Barbara Bartlik, MD, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Dr. Marion Zucker Goldstein, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the State University of New York at Buffalo emphasize that because so many cases of ED occur along with conditions like hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes, men having trouble achieving or maintaining an erection should first contact their physician for a thorough physical exam. While nobody wants to have these medical conditions, in some cases treating them and adopting a healthy lifestyle takes care of the ED as well.

Men with diabetes have a higher risk of ED.

For men who do not have underlying physical problems, Bartlik and Goldstein recommend getting a referral to a trained sex therapist. Sometimes physicians prescribe medications like Viagra, even if they believe the problem with sexual functioning is psychological. Erectile dysfunction can lead to a downward spiral of anxiety that only makes the problem worse, but if a man is able to take an ED drug and enjoy sexual activity once again, the cycle of anxiety can be broken. The ED medication may not be needed long term as long as the man and his partner are able to move past the issues that contribute to his performance anxiety.

2. Maneet Bhatia and Chris MacKinnon, counseling psychologists at McGill University in Montreal are experts in male psychology, sexuality, and intimacy, and they point out that some men with ED do not experience relief with drug therapy. “For 25 percent of men with erectile dysfunction, medication can be ineffective, since their difficulties are largely psychological.” For these men, Bhatia and MacKinnon believe that sexual performance problems require that the men and their partners change their perspective on what “good sex” is.

Some experts say healthy intimacy is the key to satisfying sex.

They suggest a three-point plan for breaking the cycle of performance anxiety and restoring sexual satisfaction:

Men with ED must avoid too-high standards for erections. Many men with ED underrate the quality of their erection during sexual activity.

Men should understand that the occasional difficulty achieving an erection is not the same thing as ED. Erectile dysfunction refers to persistent difficulty with erections, not the occasional “off day.”

Men should know that sexual performance is an evolving process, particularly in relationships that are new. Discovering how to achieve sexual satisfaction is a process, and placing too much emphasis on the quality of an erection can stall that discovery process.

3. Dr. Dan Rutherford, the original medical director for the website NetDoctor.co.uk and general medicine practitioner in St. Andrews, Scotland, says that psychological and physical causes often overlap in cases of ED. Rutherford believes that too many doctors first recommend medication for ED and only consider psychological factors if these medications fail.

Men with ED should be evaluated for physical problems like heart disease.

Erectile dysfunction should not be viewed as an isolated problem that can be fixed once and for all, because there are often relationship issues that go along with ED. Figuring out whether psychological issues led to ED or whether ED led to psychological issues is a “chicken or egg” situation, according to Rutherford. The important thing is that communication between a man and his partner is essential to successful ED treatment. Working with a licensed sex therapy is indicated when a couple’s communication problems compound problems with sexual functioning.

4. Lisa Thomas, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Sex Therapist in Greenwood Village, Colorado, believes that too many men put too much faith in medication. She states, “For most men, erectile problems are caused by an anxiety issue, not a medical issue.” Thomas believes that while ED drugs do solve the mechanical problem of attaining an erection, if a man does not address the psychological questions of why he is having the problem in the first place, he cannot take control of his own sexual response.

Sometimes the key to treating ED is understanding psychological issues.

Thomas acknowledges that men with vascular problems or other medical problems may benefit greatly from ED drugs. But she also believes that in many cases, persistent ED is a result of dodging sexual difficulties and “hiding behind a prescription.” For couples who cannot have sex at least twice a month, Thomas recommends taking the pressure off by regularly spending time intimately without either partner pushing for sexual activity. As sexual activity picks back up, a couple can learn to handle the occasional erection problem without blame, shame, or anxiety.

5. Dr. Mehmet Oz, co-creator of Sharecare.com and vice chair and professor of surgery at Columbia University, also directs the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital. In addition, Oz is an Emmy-winning host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” a nationally syndicated talk show. Dr. Oz says that physicians and counselors today are moving away from the older conventional wisdom that all ED is psychological.

The view that men have complete control over their ability to maintain an erection psychologically is becoming less popular as more research shows that physical processes unrelated to psychological health are often correlated with ED. He says on Sharecare.com, “We now know that a man can’t will his penis to an erection like a magician levitates an assistant.”

It's not always easy to tease apart physical and psychological causes of ED.

But he doesn’t dismiss psychological causes for ED altogether, pointing out that different chemical reactions in the brain can result in stress, anxiety, and depression, and that these problems are also associated with ED.

Making Sense of It All
So what is a man who is experiencing ED to make of these differing recommendations from medical and psychological experts? Is therapy the answer or is medication the answer? Until someone comes up with a definitive test that can say whether a particular man’s ED is caused primarily by physiology or psychology, men experiencing ED should allow for both possibilities.

If a man, with the help of his doctor, concludes that his ED is based on psychology or relationship issues, he does not necessarily have to forego medications. On the contrary, many physicians believe that ED drugs can “jump start” a man’s sexual functioning and help him regain confidence while he works with a professional counselor to address psychological issues.

Thousands of men order ED medications online every day for convenience and privacy. If you are interested in trying an FDA-approved medication for ED like Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra, it’s easy to securely and safely order Viagra online. So what are you waiting for?

While many doctors advocate breastfeeding, other supporters use the argument that it’s a cheaper option than paying for bottles and formula, but a new study shows breastfeeding comes with a price.

The hidden fees

“Breastfeeding for six months or longer is only free if a mother’s time is worth absolutely nothing,” said Mary C. Noonan, an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Iowa.

“When people say breastfeeding is free, I think their perspective is that one doesn’t have to buy anything to breastfeed whereas one needs to purchase formula and bottles to formula-feed,” Phyllis L. F. Rippeyoung, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Canada’s Acadia University said. “But, this simplistic view doesn’t take into consideration the hidden cost: the substantial income women often lose when they breastfeed for a long duration. To me, I see it as being highly related to how women’s unpaid work has always been undervalued.”

For a woman to breastfeed and work is difficult. Many companies do not accommodate new moms and some chose to go from full time to part time work to care for their child.

Needed changes

Rippeyoung say the research highlights the need for federal legislation that would protect the rights of all mothers to breastfeed at the workplace and compensate them for the unpaid labor associated with this type of infant feeding, especially if the government is going to continue to push for women to breastfeed.

“Currently, breastfeeding promotion focuses almost exclusively on encouraging women to breastfeed—without providing adequate economic and social supports to facilitate the practice—a reality that helps reproduce gender, class, and racial inequality,” Rippeyoung said.

“Legislation more supportive of breastfeeding would include paid parental leave and onsite daycares. Unless these or other policies are put in place, formula-feeding will continue to be the only realistic option for many women in the United States.”

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is far from rare. The Massachusetts Male Aging Study estimated that in the United States alone, around 50 million men experience ED at some point in their lives. Definitions of what constitutes ED vary somewhat, but a generally accepted definition is that ED is difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. Men of any age may experience ED, though it is more common in older age groups. Furthermore, what causes ED in one age group may be different from what causes ED in another age group. This article will explore ED decade by decade, exploring the most common causes for each age group and the various treatment options.

The 20s

Young men sometimes experience ED too.

Erectile dysfunction is less common for men in their 20s, but young men who experience it are not alone. Because young men are considered to be in their sexual prime, and are generally healthier, physical causes of ED common to older age groups like coronary artery disease rarely cause ED in younger men. More common causes for men in this age group include:

Stress

Anxiety

Alcohol use

Recreational drug use

Young men experiencing ED should see their doctor so that problems that could contribute to ED (like diabetes or heart disease) may be ruled out. If a physical problem is found, successfully treating it will often “cure” the ED. If no physical problems can be found, many doctors may recommend counseling for coping with stress and may prescribe drugs like Viagra to help “kick start” a man’s sexual functioning while he learns new coping skills.

The 30s

The 30s can be an exciting and stressful decade.

Though men in their 30s may have developed more confidence in the bedroom, the 30s are often a stressful decade for men. Many men get married, buy a house, or have children, all while trying to succeed professionally. Stress and plain tiredness can cause ED in men in their 30s, though the probability of physical problems like diabetes, obesity, and early heart disease slightly increases in this age group too. Scheduling an exam with a physician is the first step to addressing ED for men in their 30s. If underlying health problems like diabetes or high cholesterol are discovered, they can be treated, and better overall health may help with ED. Doctors may prescribe ED drugs for men in their 30s, but they may also recommend counseling for men who are coping with overly busy, stress-filled lives.

The 40s

Many men in their 40s begin feeling the stresses of middle age.

Approximately 40% of men aged 40 to 50 report experiencing erectile dysfunction at least occasionally. Research studies have found that men in their 40s who experience erectile dysfunction have a higher risk of coronary artery disease than men who do not. It is very important for men in their 40s who experience ED to see their doctor to determine if heart disease is present. The risk of diabetes also increases after age 40, and this too has been linked with ED in men in this age group. Fortunately, treatments for high cholesterol and diabetes are available, and treating these conditions may be sufficient to take care of the ED as well. However, ED drugs are often prescribed to men in their 40s, and if they are, following usage instructions closely for best results and fewest side effects is critical.

The 50s

Many health issues begin to show up after age 50.

The Brief Male Sexual Function Inventory, a questionnaire administered by doctors at the Mayo Clinic, determined that 2.4% of men in their 50s have erectile dysfunction. As men get older, the likelihood of ED predicting coronary artery disease is lower, and this is good news. However, after age 50, having an inactive lifestyle, being obese, or having underlying medical conditions like heart disease and diabetes are associated with higher incidence of ED. The Health Professionals Follow-up Study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that after age 50, the percentage of men who experienced their first problems with ED increased by 26%. Though men in their 50s are often prescribed drugs for ED, many so-called “modifiable health behaviors” like regular exercise, healthy diet, and not smoking are also associated with improvement of sexual functioning.

The 60s

Retirement doesn't necessarily mean the end of romance.

A man’s testosterone production starts dropping after age 30 or so, but many men don’t notice problems with sexual functioning until much later – often after age 60. A man in his 60s who experiences ED should discuss with his doctors some of the possible health problems that could be related to sexual function. If heart disease, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure are found, those problems should be treated to improve overall health. If these problems are not present, a physician may want to determine the patient’s testosterone levels. Normally testosterone levels in men range from 300 to 1,200 nanograms per deciliters of blood. That is a wide range of “normal,” but once testosterone levels drop to 200 nanograms per deciliter or less, doctors may consider supplementing testosterone to bring them back up to normal levels. ED drugs like Viagra, when used as directed, are still good options for many men in this age group.

The 70s

Sex does not have to end in the golden years.

By age 70, some 75% of men have experienced erectile dysfunction at some point in life. Men report decreasing sexual desire with increased age, and this phenomenon is well-documented. However, in men aged 70 to 80, more than half report that they are still sexually active. By age 70, factors like arthritis, depression, kidney disease, and alcohol abuse are also reported as contributing to unsatisfactory sexual performance. Additionally, as men age, drugs are not cleared as swiftly from the body, and so undesired drug interactions affect quality of life and sexual functioning. Under medical supervision, and taking into account other medical conditions, men in their 70s may benefit from prescription drugs for ED or from testosterone replacement therapy.

The 80s and Beyond

Healthy seniors can successfully treat their ED.

Though 51% of men in their 80s report erections firm enough for intercourse, many other factors affect sexual functioning after age 80. Many men in this age group have lost partners to death, and men without regular sex partners report lower sex drive, poorer sexual function, and less sexual satisfaction, according to a study by Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston. Though some men over 80 can take ED drugs like Viagra, they are at higher risk of complications, particularly if they take nitroglycerin for angina. Any man over 80 who wants treatment for ED should consult with a cardiologist to ensure they are healthy enough for sexual activity and that ED drugs are safe for them to take.

Erectile dysfunction can happen at any age, and men who experience it should not feel isolated. Men in their 40s and 50s may find ED more distressing than younger or older men. These men generally do not consider themselves “old” and may be dealing with personal issues like

Children growing up and leaving home

Death or disability of their parents

Divorce and remarriage

Job stress

Increased financial demands

The good news is that there are many ways to effectively deal with ED, from lifestyle changes to treating underlying health conditions to use of drugs specifically designed for ED. There have never been as many options available for treating ED as there are today, and researchers are constantly pursuing treatments that are even more effective and safe.

In a society where email is checked constantly, it’s not uncommon to find a few unwanted emails in the inbox. We’re not talking about an email from your mother-in-law, we’re talking about spam. Recently there has been a surge in the amount of spam that tries to get people to buy lifestyle medications like Viagra and Cialis.

A new study points out some alarming statistics. To sell $100 worth of Viagra, a spam provider needs to send 12.5 million messages. While it takes millions of emails to get so little profit, spammers say it’s worth it, after all computers are doing all the work.

It’s tough to track all spammers. According to computer scientists, getting rid of spam altogether is next to impossible. However, there are a few tricks to cut down on the number of unwanted emails that land in your inbox. Here are a few tips:

Watch out for default options and checkboxes.

When you sign up or register online for some services or products, you might be presented with check boxes that offer to send you email announcements or special offers. These options are usually pre-selected by default, so if you aren’t interested in receiving these kinds of notices, remember to uncheck them before you continue.

Open a separate email account.

Consider getting a “dummy” or “decoy” email account from a free email service (Hotmail, Yahoo, and Gmail are a few) to siphon off spam from your primary account. Use this “decoy” to sign up for mailing lists, shop online, or join social networking sites. This way, if the account gets too filled with spam, you can simply delete it.

Buy from a reputable company, like AccessRx.com
