This interview is one in a series of expert interviews on the AccessRx.com blog. We add new interviews on a regular basis. Please see our complete list of insightful interviews
1. In what ways have the media developments of the past ten years changed the way we live?
The fast development of online and mobile media. Now, people watch what they want to watch, when they want to watch it. They can also watch WHERE they want to watch. Media is going through a phase right now where there are people famous for being bad or for just being on a show. It’s because media is so hungry for content and people want new content constantly. We live in a time when we can consume media anytime we want. This allows us to be a very mobile society, yet still connected. Being connected used to mean you are in one place. Now, being connected has nothing to do with your locality.
2. How important is it for small business owners to employ social media tactics in their marketin
g strategies?
Social Media is here to stay. What you need is a tribe. A group of people who will read your blog, respond to you online, and buy your products. Social media gives your tribe a place to land. A place to meet one another without ever leaving home. It is about relationships, not about spam. The three basics are Twitter, Linked in and Facebook. You never really need to bother with the others if you do not want to. This is the bare minimum you need if you are in business.
3. How has the business landscape been affected by women entrepreneurs over the past several years?
Women have always been a force in business. While we do not see an increase in women in the board room, we do see them starting their own business. For younger women, having it all does not mean a job. It means your own business which works on a schedule that is best for you and your family lifestyle. Women can and do make a lot of money working from home or online. Being a home business no longer means being a tiny business with barely any income. Each woman can define what success is and go after that in her business.
4. What is the one t
ip you’d give a business owner regarding achieving success?
Know what your definition of success is and finding a mentor who has done what you are trying to do. I spent a lot of years listening to people who told me they could tell me how to get my television show to the “next level”…for a fee. They had never done the level of success that I had already achieved. They had never done it for anyone else. What they saw was an opportunity to take advantage of someone who was open to learning more. A good mentor can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars but only if they have done it. I have taken courses, follow their instructions to the letter and did not get good results. I realized as you learn, tweak what you learn to fit your own business and if it does not get results, do not continue it.
5. Can great success in a business sense and great success in a personal sense co-exist? Or does one usually sacrifice in place of the other?
I believe you can do both. You must know what your family goals are and your personal goals are. For example, I know a woman who makes a lot of money in her business, however she is in meetings every night of the week. That is not the lifestyle I want. Some people do not want the lifestyle that I have. They do not want to have to go to parties and mingle. You have to be very clear about what success looks like in your life and go after that. This may mean your business won’t look like your competitors. You have to be ok with that.
